Rodnreel.com was particularly vital in the establishment of Capt. Brian's Bayou Adventures. It's chief owner and operator, Capt. Brian Epstein, had just moved to the Bayou State from New Jersey, when he stumbled upon what a growing number of people believe is the best fishing and hunting website in the world.

Epstein was a seasoned veteran, after operating large offshore charter vessels on the East Coast for more than a decade. However, he was relatively an unknown in southeast Louisiana, where he was setting up his new business venture in Delacroix. He was admittedly leery when he first learned about Rodnreel.com in the mid-1990s.

"I just happened to stumble upon it," said Epstein, who now lives in New Orleans. "I was with a friend at a store, when we met someone who worked with Rodnreel.com. When I told him about my new business, he told me some great things about the site. He told me that I literally would not have to advertise anywhere else."

After chatting with some other captains in the area, Epstein began to realize how intensely popular the site was. He became a regular reader, picking up tips from other anglers and guides across the state. He was also impressed with the content, which includes the links to live Doppler radar, satellite imagery, and up-to-the-minute marine weather forecasts. He also often used high-definition aerial photographs, as well as the Rodnreel database of every offshore rig and platform in the Gulf of Mexico.

The buoy reports, which give the wind speed and direction in several areas, the graphical tide charts, and Astrotables, which outline the major and minor feeding periods, were points of interest that Epstein found invaluable. But he was particularly taken with the "Fishing and Hunting Reports" section, where readers get the scoop on where the fish are, and what baits and lures they are being taken on.

"I really liked the "Pictures of the Best" section, where I can publish my own photos when I want," Epstein said.

A few days later, Epstein decided to put Rodnreel.com to work for his business. For a very small investment, he began to immediately see returns.

"It didn't take long at all," he said. "I mean it was within a couple of hours and the phone started ringing. I couldn't believe it."

The secret, he said, is that Rodnreel.com is read by so many - more than 19,000 a week, according to the latest numbers. And what makes this medium particularly effective is that these people are avid outdoors enthusiasts - exactly the consumers that he needed to reach.

"No where else can I expose my business to the world as effectively," he said. "As soon as I send out my fishing report or photos, I'm seen by thousands of people."

Epstein receives e-mails, telephone calls daily from customers directly through Rodnreel.com. He estimates that he garners "about 75 percent" of his new business from the website.

Epstein believes that Rodnreel.com makes it possible for good guides to be successful. In other words, it brings new clientele. Bringing back the return business is the responsibility of the guide. If you work well with people, and are successful on the water, he believes that success will come.

"This is one of the best advertising mediums I can imagine," Epstein said. "More people read Rodnreel.com than any other magazine I can think of. And unlike a magazine, people who read Rodnreel.com, do it every day. With a magazine, after you read a story, you're not going to pick it up again."

And as the recreational fishing industry becomes more competitive, Epstein said there has never been a greater need to advertise on Rodnreel.com.
